2018 Winter Olympics: Team GB Medal Update

As Team GB chase a record-making fifth medal at the Winter Olympics, we look at the four medals they have already picked up – including Britain’s first medal on skis and more milestones!

Men’s Skeleton

Dom Parsons took Britain’s first medal of the 2018 Winter Olympics with a spectacular performance in the men’s skeleton on Friday.

Shooting head-first down the steep ice track, Parsons hit a wall on his final run and looked like he wouldn’t make the podium.

But after regaining his composure, Parsons beat five-time world champion Martins Dukurs by 0.11sec to claim bronze.

Women’s Slopestyle

At seventeen-years-old, Izzy Atkin is the youngest member of Team GB competing at Pyeongchang. Nonetheless, on Saturday she became the first Brit ever to win an Olympic medal on skis.

Going into her final run of the women’s slopestyle, Atkin was in fourth place and ready to bet it all.

Pulling off a brilliant series of tricks, complete with a tough switch 1080, she scored 84.60 points to clench her historic bronze medal.

Women’s Skeleton

Returning to the treacherous ice track of the skeleton run, Team GB’s two hopefuls in Saturday’s final did not disappoint. In fact, they set three more records for Britain.

Going into the final run of the event, Sochi 2014 champion Lizzy Yarnold was coming second behind Austrian Janine Flock. However, Yarnold managed to close the gap and win by 0.45 seconds, becoming the first Brit to successfully defend a Winter Olympics title.

Teammate Laura Deas also clinched bronze in the event by an eye-watering 0.02 seconds, making it the first time in Winter Olympics history that Britain has won two medals in the same event.

Combined with Izzy Atkin’s bronze in the slopestyle, it was also the first time Britain has taken home three medals in the same day!
