Austria Ski Accommodation in Ellmau, Austria

This resort is in the Ski Welt area, which is one of the largest in Austria, with a total of 250km of pistes. However, its component parts make the area much similar, as it's essentially made up of a number of smaller, lift or bus linked resorts.

Ellmau (with 55km of runs) is probably the quietest of the resorts, with skiing that largely caters to the beginner and family market.

There are great nursery slopes and a good ski school, although classes can be big.

There is also reasonable cruising for intermediates of medium ability. Boarders will also find the Ski Welt a good place to learn, but there is only one park and half-pipe in the area (at Soll).

Unfortunately, Ellmau and its neighbours suffer from a poor snow record. They have tried to increase natural snow with new snowmaking facilities, but it still remains a problem and queues often are a result.

Ellmau village itself is traditional, quiet and full of ambience.

Getting around

Ellmau has the classic Austrian après ski vibe with a few lively bars, great little places to enjoy coffee and cakes and sun terraces for gluhwein.

Amongst the liveliest of the lot are the Memory Bar (+43 5358 2243) and Pub 66 . For sport the Irish bar O’Malleys in the Hotel Alpenhof is great.

Soll is a short bus ride away and has a bigger après ski scene if you want a big afternoon/evening out.

Eating out

As you would expect from a small Austrian resort, the cuisine is mostly regional dishes, which all the restaurants and hotels do very well.

The Brenneralm is a rustic restaurant which serves delicious dishes, large portions and friendly staff. Through the winter it is only open in the evening from Wed-Sat, otherwise it shuts at 7pm

The Memory bar is great for freshly bakes pizza at very reasonable prices, there is also a happy hour for pizza when they are just €5 between 12-2pm! +43 5358 2243

The Kaiserhof is a smart a la carte restaurant which is good for lunch or dinner. The kitchen creates exquisite Austrian dishes

Another favourite by many is the Gasthaus Lobewein which is a great central chalet with plenty of rooms and excellent food. It is a little tricky to find at Dorf 22 +43 5358 4168.

Off the slopes the Kaiserbad leisure centre is fantastic, the outdoor pools are kept nice and warm in the winter and indoors there is a children’s pool, waterfall, counter current conditioning, Jacuzzi, turbo slide and much much more.

Sledding and Tobogganing is very popular with 750km of tested and perfectly maintained toboggan runs over the whole of the Tirol.
Ellmau has its own route with is 4.5 km long and can be reach by foot on a path-way to Hausberg and runs down to the ski runs in Ellmau. Opening hours are between 8am – 5pm and on Wednesdays to Saturdays it opens in the evening between 6.30 – 9.30pm .

There is also a great range of sports including hiking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. One of the highlight is tubing which is great for adults and children .
