The après ski scene in Mayrhofen grows each year. It was once a small family friendly resort, and although still brilliant for families, it now attracts huge numbers for the off the slopes parties. This in part is due to the growing popularity of snowbombing which attracts large numbers in April every year.

There are two major attractions come 3.30 in the afternoon, the White Lounge up on Ahorn which is a stunning igloo bar based on the side of the mountain. This is ideal for a chilled out drink, good music and plenty of deck chairs to relax on. Then most head down to the Hotel Strass which has the Ice Bar, this is the place to be and by far the liveliest. The bar opens from 3.30 attracting mainly Brits, Germans and Swedes but mainly Dutch.

The Brucke’n Stadl couldn’t be more Austrian if it tried with traditional building and lively traditional Austrian bands.
If you like the lively atmosphere without the rowdiness then the Coup and More is a modern easy going bar and restaurant offering cocktails, sun terrace and good music .

For just a quiet drink, one of the big hotels does it well, the Neuhaus or the Neue Post Both have a very traditional Austrian atmosphere.

Eating out

Like many Austrian resorts the majority of visitors stay in hotels on a half board basis, so there isn’t the huge demand for restaurants. The restaurants it does have are often part of hotels or very good in their own right, especially the Wirsthaus zum Griena which is well worth a visit. It has a lovely old rustic style one the outskirts of town offering a very traditional menu.

The Kramerwirt offers large portions and is excellent quality The Gasthof Brücke is also great value if you go for the set menu

There is good pizza from Manni’s but this is expensive

For non skiers or after a long day on the pistes there will still be loads of keep everyone busy. One of the most popular is tobogganing which is possible through the day and in the evening. The evening suits groups or couples and runs on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night starting from 18.40. This includes tobogganing and drinks in the Action Club Zillertal (€25 for children and €28 for adults includes transport, gondola, toboggan run and drink in hut).

Walking trails is a fantastic way to take in the stunning scenery and will suit all fitness levels. Many come to the resort solely for the walking in an around the Mayrhofen Hippach holiday resort in Zillertal. The next step up is snowshoe trekking which gives you the opportunity to explore untouched powder and reach the highest peaks! Mountain guides are available for the snowshoeing and tour skies.

Also great fun is the cross country skiing with trails at Burgsschrofen in Schwendau near the Burgstallschrofen chapel. Three of the routes are also floodlit at night

Climbing and ice climbing can suit all age level and fitness levels

A trip to Austria wouldn’t be complete without a sleigh ride which is both romantic and great fun for the kids
