3 Under-the-Radar Family Ski Resorts

When it comes to family ski holidays in the Alps, not all resorts are created equal. If you’re planning a half-term or Easter ski holiday with the kids, it’s worth spending a bit of time researching the best resorts that cater particularly well to families, meaning the little ones will have more fun… and therefore so will you.

Obergurgl, Austria

There are numerous ski resorts geared towards families across France, but Obergurgl in Austria gets our vote for it's friendly Austrian charm and suitability for families with older/teenage children. It's a small, no through-traffic village, so its appeal to families is immediately apparent, with many returning here year after year.

Outside of glacier resorts, Obergurgl is one of the most snowsure areas in the Alps, and the highest parish in Austria. Its easy, well-groomed slopes are ideal for beginners or those still working on their confidence. The resort has a superb ski school too, where class-sizes are kept small, meaning tuition is focused and challenging, particularly for older children. But don’t worry, the youngsters are well catered for too, with the Bobo Mini Club for outdoor activities or the indoor Bobo kindergarten, both for children aged three and up.

Les 2 Alpes, France

Ski-mad parents will be pleased to learn that Les 2 Alpes happens to be one of the most snowsure resorts in the Alps, due to its high-altitude glacier slopes.

In terms of the little ones, kids as young as one can enjoy their first experience of sliding on the snow with the resort’s unique 'Baby Snow' device that was invented here. Elsewhere, older children are positively spoilt for choice when it comes to adventures on the snow; they can enjoy a risk-free ski jump with the Big Air Snowbag, or take a ride through the snow on all manner of snow vehicles, including a Segway. The resort even hosts a special family week right at the end of the season when most other resorts have long-since closed for the winter. What more could a family need?

Avoriaz , France

Avoriaz is a practical resort for families; it’s car-free and easy to get around via horse-drawn sleighs the kids will just love. Accommodation is conveniently ski-in/ski-out and the Village des Enfants in the heart of the resort will entertain the under-threes out on gentle slopes – Disney characters included. The British-run, Avoriaz Alpine Ski School for older children is also first-rate.

For those who have already found their ski legs (or for after you’ve dropped the kids at ski school for the day) Avoriaz and surrounding resorts offer 650 kilometres of lift-linked pistes, along with the opportunity to ski over the border into Switzerland. Off the slopes, there’s the Aquariaz – a subtropical water park housed in a giant glass dome situated at the top of the mountain. There’s enough here to keep both the kids and the young at heart adults entertained, with fun and high-speed water slides for all.
