The Best Ski Resorts in Europe to Celebrate New Year's Eve

The festive season will soon be here, and eager skiers and snowboarders looking to see in the New Year in style will be heading to the Alps. There’s a superb range of resorts to choose from, with dazzling fireworks displays, buckets of fresh snow, seasonal celebrations and plenty of mulled wine to enjoy. But not all ski resorts are created equal, and for festive New Year’s revelry, some Alpine destinations stand head and shoulders above the competition.

2020 will soon be here, so here’s a rundown of some of the best ski resorts in Europe to celebrate New Year’s Eve on the snow. From family-friendly destinations to high-altitude towns with the biggest parties around, there are plenty of amazing resorts to spend New Year in the Alps.

New Year's Eve fireworks

St Anton, Austria

Regarded by many to boast the best après ski scene in the Alps, St Anton is an amazing place to see in the New Year. Thirsty revellers return from the slopes to fill the bars with festive cheer, with foot-stomping, table-top dancing and the merry clinking of steins across the resort.

Bars like the Krazy Kanguruh and the Mooserwirt lead the charge from around 3pm, with further celebrations taking place in St Anton’s pedestrian centre into the wee hours. At 8pm, the free St Anton Illuminated event welcomes families for child-oriented celebrations in the heart of town, then at 11.30pm the countdown brings revellers out into the snowy streets to watch fireworks exploding across the night sky.

Val Thorens, France

Set at an eye-watering altitude of 2,300 metres, Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Europe – and it throws one of the best New Year Eve celebrations in the Alps. Val Tho Crazy Night descends upon the Place Caron in the centre of resort for the New Year, with a huge concert, torchlight descent, live video projections, DJs and a ski and snowboard freestyle show. At this altitude, with nothing but soaring peaks and starlit skies as the backdrop, the fireworks and pyrotechnic displays are spectacular.

Verbier, Switzerland

Verbier is famous for its stylish bars, elegant luxury chalets and breathtaking Alpine scenery – and when New Year ticks around, it’s a most beautiful place to be. Spend the day leading up to New Year’s Eve exploring the expansive Four Valleys domain, before returning to resort for festive après ski celebrations. Down in town, the Champagne flows from 4pm as live music fills the Place Centrale. Skilled DJs get the crowd animated from around 11pm, before midnight arrives and fireworks explode across the night ski to see in the New Year in Verbier.

Val d’Isère, France

Whether for a festive getaway with the kids as a family, or an après ski-fuelled blowout among friends, Val d’Isère ranks among the most popular ski resorts in Europe – and with good reason. This high-altitude ski resort offers beautiful Alpine architecture and snow-sure slopes from December onwards, is a hit with families and groups of friends all season long.

Val d’Isère really puts on a show for New Year, with the Festi Light celebrations bringing colourful street parties, live music, ice sculptures and of course a spectacular firework bonanza. Across town, lively bars offer the perfect setting to celebrate the New Year among friends and family.

Away from the hustle and bustle of town centre over New Year’s Eve, there’s a fine selection of luxury catered chalets in Val d’Isère where guests can celebrate among friends and family in privacy. For example, the 5* Bellevarde Lodge Chablis takes pride of place by the Santons piste, with ancient timbers lending the property a wonderfully Savoyard feel. The terrace hot tub is an ideal spot to relax, watching the firework display from the comfort of your peaceful Alpine retreat.

Alpe d’Huez, France

One of the most beginner-friendly resorts in the French Alps, Alpe d’Huez is ideal for New Year celebrations among family in the Alps. Above the town, gentle green pistes and rolling blues criss-cross the slopes, offering ideal conditions for nervous learners to sharpen their ski skills, and there’s a wide range of family-friendly chalets and hotels with in-house childcare, too. When New Year’s Eve ticks round, lively celebrations in the heart of town set the scene perfectly – with a beautiful fireworks display and a torchlight descent courtesy of the ESF ski school.
