Apres

Meribel has one of the best apres ski scenes in the French Alps and if you’re staying in Meribel Mottaret, you will want to head over to the centre of Meribel to the Rond Point (or the Ronnie as it’s known to the locals) for at least one afternoon of apres ski session on the large sun terrace. But if, you want to finish the day firmly in Mottaret there are a couple of bars which serve up a cold beer or vin chaud and stay open until the early hours of the morning if you fancy staying out late!

Rastro Bar
The Rastro Bar tends to get busy quite early on so if you want to bag yourself a table, you will need to be there from 4pm onwards. The bar plays a mix of 60s groove, 70s funk rock and 80s pop and after a couple of drinks, the dance floor gets crowded so the inevitable table dancing begins. Each Tuesday they host a rock themed evening, so expect a boisterous afternoon into evening apres ski session!

Downtown Bar
This is the British run apres ski pub in Mottaret. The atmosphere is very relaxed and it makes for a good apres ski destination. They have pool tables, dartboards and sports coverage and with beer only €3 a pint at happy hour (4-7pm), you can’t go wrong!

Le Privilege Club
If you don’t want the party to stop after Rastro, then head over to the Privilege Club which is Mottaret’s very own nightclub. Tuesday is the night to go as all the seasonnaires pack into this club, making for a lively atmosphere. If you’re not planning on first lifts in the morning then head here and party until the early hours.

Eating out

Mottaret sits a few more bends up the mountain than the main resort of Meribel and if you’re not keen to stray too far from your chalet, the resort has a couple of restaurants to go to for your chalet hosts’ night off.

However, if you‘re looking for more variety, you can hop on the bus down to Meribel Centre (about 10-15 minutes away), where there will be considerably more choices.

La Table du Ruitor
If you’re looking for something a bit special, an evening meal at La Table du Ruitor within the hotel Alpenruitor should be on the cards. As you walk into the restaurant, it feels like you’re stepping back in time. The interior is clad from floor to ceiling in wood, the rustic decor and traditionally dressed waiting staff create a special experience. On the menu there are your typical Savoyard specialities such as fondue and raclette and at 35 Euros for a 4 course meal it won’t break the budget!

The Cote Brune
In the heart of Mottaret there are a couple of cafe style restaurants, popular for lunch and dinner. The Cote Brune is found slap bang in the centre of all the action, the tables on the terrace are crowded when the sun is shining. They are open all day and serve your typical dishes of pasta, pizza and meats; but service is occasionally lacklustre.

The Zig Zag
The Zig Zag, also in the heart of Mottaret, is inexpensive and serves traditional Savoyard cuisine. The staff and friendly and service is fast!

Mountain Burger
A favourite with many seasonnaires is the infamous Mountain Burger. Tucked away by the ski hire shops you will find the Mountain Burger counter where service is fast and portion sizes are ‘mountainous’, hence the name. With crusty French bread, a huge patty of meat, generous toppings of melted reblochon and bacon topped with gherkins, it’s cheap and cheerful and more than enough to fuel you for most of the day – great if your skiing on a budget!

Activities

Linked with the main Meribel resort by a free bus service, this fun young resort never lacks things to do outside of skiing. However if you do wish to keep just to Mottaret itself, there is a selection of activities here too.

A cross country ski track runs straight from the resort all the way to the Lac Tueda where there is a large selection of nature reserve trails and pisted cross country tracks. Don’t be fooled into thinking that cross country skiing is easy – this sport is very scenic but will definitely leave you feeling like you’ve had an excellent work out!

For a higher speed view of the mountains, why not hop onto a snow mobile? Snow Biker can be found in Le Laitet – Mottaret and an hour snowmobiling including a guide is 110€. However, if you’re on a budget, there is also a mini snow biker circuit which runs from 10:00-17:00 and is only 10€ for ten minutes of riding time.

For a treat for all the family, Mottaret also offers Horse sleigh rides that do a tour of the Tueda Lake for 1 – 4 people at 95€ for the hour.

With a nice variety of activities to choose from you can make the evenings as unforgettable as the days.

Meribel is one of the best ski resorts for families, and Meribel Mottaret, which sits just above the main resort, is in some ways better for families. The compact nature of the resort makes ski access much easier than if you were staying down in the centre.

With plenty of ski schools operating out of Meribel Mottaret as well as some good nursery slopes, it’s a great place for beginners to start out. The green run from Meribel Mottaret to the centre is wide and gently and pretty long too which means you don’t have to worry about constantly getting on and off chairlifts. Although be warned, it is in the shade later in the day so can get a little chilly for young ones.

In terms of keeping the kids entertained off the slopes, Mottaret is slightly lacking. Other than a cinema, which shows the occasional blockbuster, you will want to take the free ski bus down to Meribel centre. The Olympic centre has fantastic facilities for children when the weather sets in. With a large swimming pool with slides, an indoor ice skating rink and bowling alley you can be entertained for hours!
