Christmas Ski Holiday Suggestions

Christmas is a magical time of year and where better to spend it than heading to the beautiful snowy mountains to have a guaranteed white Christmas surrounded by family and friends. The festive period officially starts at the beginning of December when the Christmas lights are turned on and from then on resorts are filled with Christmas markets and festivities for revellers to enjoy. Many of the bars will host festive themed nights and restaurants will put on a special menu.

Christmas day is a joy in the mountains with a chance to spot Santa on the slopes and to top it all off you can come back to your chalet to have someone else cook the turkey and do the washing up!

Christmas is a peak week so is one of the more expensive weeks of the season. However, it is cheaper than New Year and Half Term Week so families restricted to school holidays and wanting to keep hold of the budget will be best of looking at a Christmas or Easter break. Many chalets will offer good deals during Christmas week with group discounts and savings on lift passes and ski hire.

Val d’Isere is one of the most popular resorts in the world for a Christmas break. Not only is it high altitude so offers snow sure skiing, but the stunning resort centre feels like a true winter wonderland with fresh snow and fairy lights scattered around the town. Val d’Isere has some of the best apres ski in the Alps with many bars hosting Christmas parties from the afternoon through to the early hours.

Courchevel is north facing and has some of the best snow in the Three Valleys, making it a popular choice for early season skiing. The picturesque resort is split into several villages with 1850 offering the most luxurious accommodation but you will be able to find more affordable accommodation in the other resorts. Courchevel has a good range or bars and restaurants with many putting on special festive menus.

Ischgl is another north facing resort and has some of the best snow in Austria with the majority of the skiing above 2000m. Ischgl normally put a special festive programme with different events every year to keep things fresh for returning guests, including club nights and festive menus.

Les Gets is a magical resort to visit with the family at Christmas. Les Gets is awarded the ‘Famille Plus’ meaning that the resort offers a number of activities and services for children and families. Santa can be seen out and about in resort in the run up to Christmas and guests are able to visit him and his elves at their grotto in the enchanted forest. There is a special post box in the resort for children to post their Christmas letter to Santa and make sure you don’t miss the torch lit decent on Christmas Eve.
